Not everyone is born with an innate sense of colour and design, but there are simple techniques and theories which, when followed, will help you attain designs that are uniquely yours. This workshop breaks the design process down into three categories: 1) the architecture of the textiles, that is the sett and structure; 2) the graphic drawing on your textile – stripes, checks, etc; and 3) Jane's approach to colour in handweaving. This practical workshop explores design in a graphic sense and colour as an emotional response. Six samples in this workshop illustrate either a graphic theory or a colour theory – all done with one style of yarn in one structure. 27 colours are employed to make a stunning set of samples 18 ins x 20 ins each.

In this technique colourful threads are inlaid during the weaving of a fine linen, plain weave web to create a gauzy fabric containing a pictorial or graphic image. When hung in a window the resulting weavings make wonderful privacy screens — daylight reveals the silhouette of the inlaid image, while at night the houselight illuminates the colours of the inlaid threads to reveal a "faux tapestry" effect. This technique is simple enough for beginners with a two or four-harness loom and can become increasingly challenging as you develop your skills to produce stunning effects.

Learn this ancient craft which is experiencing an exciting rebirth and being explored by young and old alike. In this workshop you will weave braids and trims as round cords, half rounds and square cords, as well as flat "ribbons" in a variety of patterns and colours. Although traditionally woven in silk threads for the ties on Japanese obis, you will be using contemporary yarns and beads. While you learn these new skills, you will make items like key chains, lanyards and bracelets to take home. The class kit includes a Kumihimo braiding disk, patterns and all the yarns and notions needed to complete the class projects.
