Register EARLY for this popular class, as it fills up quickly every year. Learn how to use a hand (drop) spindle to spin raw fibre into beautiful, unique yarn, suitable for knitting, weaving, etc. Then try your hand on one of several spinning wheels. All materials provided by the Guild, including a hand spindle to take home.

Put to good use the various fibres that have been accumulating in your stash. Most spinners have a stash of fibres that have been collected over the years and have been saved for that special project that has yet to materialize. Through the course of this two day workshop we will hone our fibre preparation and blending skills as well as prepare a variety of samples from our respective stashes… bringing us one step closer to creating beautiful and inspiring yarns.

Apply colour theory techniques to yarn design. Add colour to your spinning using these simple tricks to ensure perfect results every time. Through a series of exercises and samples, hand spinners will learn the secrets of combining colours to make spectacular ombre, variegated, and confetti yarns.

Master Spinner Certificate Program—Olds College
The Master Spinner Program consists of six progressive levels of classroom and independent study involving skill development, research studies and project assignments in the area of hand spinning of all major types of fibres, yarns and the end use of the spun yarns.
At all levels, students are evaluated on the basis of written assignments, practical projects, oral presentations and skill development. For each level, there is an evaluation fee.
Those individuals who successfully complete the assignments in all six levels will receive a Master Spinner Certificate from Olds College.

This course provides the student with an introduction to the basic principles of spinning wool, the nature
and characteristics of wool, its selection and processing, and natural dyeing of wool.
Students will:
- Identify the quality and characteristics of a fleece.
- Identify the various breeds of sheep.
- Identify and explain the various pieces of equipment used in fibre preparation and spinning.
- Demonstrate introductory spinning techniques for wool and wool/silk blended fibres.
- Demonstrate introductory fibre preparation techniques.
- Demonstrate dyeing techniques using natural dyes.

Level 2

This course is a further development of the skills and knowledge acquired in Level I Spinning.
Students will:
- Identify a sound, good quality fleece for a specific end use.
- Identify and operate at least three different spinning wheels and hand spindles.
- Explain the difference between different grades of wool.
- Demonstrate:
- plying yarn
- spinning "S" and "Z" yarns
- spinning varied thickness of yarns
- spinning exotic fibres:
- spinning with Tops
- blending fibre for different purposes
- Demonstrate ability to silk, llama, alpaca, mohair, camel, and camel down.
