Take your own picture and break it down so you can make your own pattern and then sew it out. Template piecing, curved piecing appliqué and paper piecing can be combined techniques to achieve whatever effect you would like. Simplifying your picture so that it can be pieced is the hardest part of this class. This knowledge will enable you to continue on in your quilting journey.

You will learn basic art and design elements, start a still life quilt, plus the language needed to fairly critique your own work as well as others.
Day One: Classroom format with cut/paste activity and language skills. Related photographic techniques and symbolism are addressed.
Day Two: Studio format. Start a floral still life art quilt to begin using knowledge gained. This is a pre-requisite to The Portrait as Quilted Art course slated for 2009 as described below.

***Coming in 2009, The Portrait as Quilted Art, a five day intense workshop in portraiture. Surface Design Fundamentals, the 2 day 2008 workshop, or equivalent, at instructor's discretion, is a pre-requisite along with a good working knowledge of colour theory.

The focus of this class to is create a picture of flowers, using fabric. The methods of petal shading will be worked on in class and you will be able to shade a more realistic flower for the art of appliqué. Templates will be provided in the material fee. No machine required!

Paper piecing combined with colour gradation makes an interesting small wall quilt. You will learn how to pre-cut fabrics to reduce waste and increase speed in piecing. Focus is on the use of colour gradation for quilting. Paper piecing templates provided in the material fee. A machine is required for this class.

Create stunning quilts using invisible machine appliqué. Learn a slick and easy method of designing quilts from pictures of flowers—all done by machine! The appliqué is done in a way which creates the look of mock hand appliqué and free motion quilting instruction will enhance your fibre art. Pattern for a lily, rose, or clematis included in class. The class will be held at Carola's Quilt Shop. Please check in at the registration desk before proceeding to the shop, which is close to the school.
