3rd Annual Gibsons Landing Fibre Arts Festival & Workshops Launched

While August may be several months away, now's the time to register for the annual Gibsons Landing Fibre Arts Festival Workshops, Seminars, and other events.

This year, the Festival is offering the largest selection of one and multi-day workshops ever, including quilting, basketry, weaving, felting, batik, needle arts and more.

Also new, an extensive lineup of woodworking workshops and seminars, the result of a unique partnership with the South Coast Value Added Co-operative, and a clear recognition that wood is fibre, too.

"The 2002 "wood is fibre, too" theme makes our Presenting Sponsorship of the Festival a natural match for Howe Sound Pulp and Paper," says Howe Sound Pulp and Paper Community Relations Officer, Elfie Hofmann. "We're in the business of producing quality fibre products, so we think it's important to support and promote the quality and diversity of our community's fibre artists, our community's cultural resources."

The Festival is also receiving significant sponsorship from Sunshine Coast Credit Union, Mountain FM, and many other businesses, both on and off the Sunshine Coast.

According to Dale Eichar, Sunshine Coast Credit Union's Chief Executive Officer, being involved in the community, and especially local arts and culture is an important focus for the credit union. "This Festival demonstrates how much the arts contribute not only to the local economy, but also to the Sunshine Coast's enviable quality of life."

Based on last year's success, the festival anticipates that attendees will come from the local communities, as well as from off-coast. Susan Knight, Promotions Director at Mountain FM, explains "with the well-known instructors, friendly atmosphere, and Gibsons Landing's scenic harbour setting, it's a pretty unique learning experience, and one we're pleased to be part of."

The Festival takes place in various venues throughout Gibsons Landing, August 16, 17, 18, 2002. As detailed in the recently launched 2002 Festival brochure, the 3rd Annual Festival offers much to see and do: workshops - over 40 (weaving, quilting, woodworking, basketry, batik, needle arts, and more), seminars, demos and displays, juried sale, merchant mall, guilds, gatherings, studio tours and other attractions.

Workshop registration is open now. Remember, great classes are sometimes cancelled due to initial low numbers - so register early! Plus there's an early bird bonus for registrations received before June 15. Registration brochures and information are available in local stores or on the official website: www.gibsonslandingfibrearts.com.

Once again, the Festival is being promoted with a poster and brochure featuring a new, specially commissioned painting by Sunshine Coast artist, Greta Grunow Guzek. Official 2002 Festival merchandise, including T-shirts and tote bags, is available at The Landing General Store in Gibsons Landing.

Second Gibsons Landing Fibre Arts Festival a Success

Following three days of festivities and a week of fibre arts-related workshops, the Gibsons Landing Fibre Arts Festival came to a close under sunny skies on Sunday, August 19, 2001.

"It was a year for firsts for the festival, and we're very pleased with the results," explained Sue Bailey, Festival Chair. "It's our first year of formal corporate sponsorship, and we're very grateful to our presenting sponsor, Howe Sound Pulp and Paper, and of course, our many other sponsors, too. We also saw a first in our official festival poster and related merchandise, a tradition we plan to continue. Other firsts included the expanded number of workshops (18, almost double the previous year's count), and our many special events, including the Wearable Art Fashion Show, Patchwork in the Park, and the guided studio tours."

One of the biggest firsts, quite literally, was the Festival Big Tent, a large venue set up in Holland Park just for the occasion. Based on last year's guest feedback, the Festival consolidated various events into the one central location. Approximately 2500 guests visited the Festival Big Tent to view displays, visit the guilds, and shop at the craft and merchant booths.

One of the Festival's ongoing goals is to make a significant positive contribution to community-based economic development, largely by attracting visitors who want to experience the arts, culture and natural beauty of the Sunshine Coast. This year, attendees came from Greater Vancouver, Vancouver Island, the Interior, Alberta, Washington and even further afield, and local businesses have reported noticeably better-than-average sales.

"I think I can speak on behalf of all the organizers when I say that the greatest reward for all our work has been meeting the people: our guests, sponsors, volunteers, artists, instructors, merchants, crafters, and friends - it's been tremendously inspiring," said Bailey.

The 3rd Annual Gibsons Landing Fibre Arts Festival is scheduled for August 16, 17, and 18, 2002, and will feature a Pacific Rim theme. Final details are currently being established, however, there will be workshops and other events similar to the 2001 program. The official festival poster is expected to be unveiled in early 2002.

For more information about the Gibsons Landing Fibre Arts Festival, including photos of the 2001 event, raffle results, an instructor application form, and more, visit www.gibsonslandingfibrearts.com.

The Gibsons Landing Fibre Arts Festival is an annual event held in mid-August in various venues surrounding historic Gibsons harbour. The festival takes place in Gibsons Landing, British Columbia, just a forty-minute scenic ferry ride from Vancouver.

NOTE: The Big Tent total guest count of 2500 is based on admission fees taken in over the three-day period (August 17, 18, 19) PLUS an estimated 350, which accounts for those guests who entered the "Big Tent" free of charge (children under 12, workshop students).

It's time to sign-up for the annual Gibsons Landing Fibre Arts Festival summer workshops.

For one week starting August 13, there will be 30 one- and multi-day classes and events featuring spinning, weaving, quilting, basketry, rug hooking, beading, and batik, and more.

Louise Hume, Festival Workshops Director, urges fibre artists of all levels to make the most of this opportunity to hone their skills and display their craft. "The Festival has well-known instructors and excellent classes, including a traditional indigo vat with Anne Babchuck from Maiwa Handprints, cedar bark basketry with Squamish band member Anna Billy, spinning with Dianne Cross, and much more. There are beginner and advanced levels, and you don't have to go far to take advantage of this - it's happening right here in Gibsons Landing."

In addition to the workshops, the Festival is hosting a juried craft sale on August 17, 18, and 19, and local artisans are invited to participate. The Festival also wants to hear from people who have new and antique quilts and other fabric pieces that they're willing to loan for display.

Howe Sound Pulp and Paper announces sponsorship of 2nd Annual Gibsons Landing Fibre Arts Festival

A Port Mellon, BC pulp and paper mill weaves together industry, arts, and culture in the local community.

One might think that a pulp and paper mill and an arts festival don't have much in common. But Howe Sound Pulp and Paper saw the connection, and has just announced that it is the official Presenting Sponsor for the Gibsons Landing Fibre Arts Festival to be held August 17 through 19, 2001.

It's a pretty unique partnership, and one that makes good sense. After all, the term "fibre" includes wood, hemp, and other plant-based resources that have been used over the millennia in making paper and textiles for both utilitarian and fine arts purposes.

As Pam Kaatz, Howe Sound's Community Relations representative points out, "our mill is in the business of producing quality fibre products, so it seems natural for us to promote the quality and diversity of our local fibre artists and textile craftspeople - our community's cultural resources."

From Howe Sound Pulp and Paper's perspective, the festival is an opportunity to be involved in the local community. The pulp and paper mill stands on its own in mountainous Howe Sound, approximately 18 kilometres (11 miles) northeast of Gibsons, BC, but its connections with the nearby Sunshine Coast communities are strong, something the company values and works to maintain. The fact that the festival involves fibre makes it all the more appropriate.

The August festival takes place in the historic Gibsons Landing harbour area, and is being promoted this year with a new-look poster and brochure featuring a specially commissioned painting by Greta Grunow Guzek. Exclusive fundraising merchandise, including t-shirts and tote bags, has also been launched this year.

The 2001 festival line-up includes Workshops All Week, with over 30 courses (registration starts March 31); the Festival Big Tent at Holland Park, featuring a juried craft fair, merchant mall, guilds, and displays; Patchwork in the Park, a medley of fibre arts activities on August 18; and a Welcome Dinner and Wearable Art Fashion Show on August 17. For more information about the 2nd Annual Gibsons Landing Fibre Arts Festival, visit www.gibsonslandingfibrearts.com.
